Sporting Lagos complete invincible run to clinch Naija Super 8 title against Remo Stars
The maiden edition of the Naija Super 8 pre-season tournament has come to an end with Sporting Lagos the first-ever champions.
Sporting defeated Remo Stars 4-2 via penalty shootout following a dramatic 1-1 draw in normal time.
Goalkeeper Christian Nwoke was the star of the show as he saved two spot kicks in the shootout give Sporting the bragging rights again.
Remo vs Sporting: Brief
From promotion to the NPFL to Naija Super 8 champions, it has been an excellent two weeks the for two-year old club.
Sporting Lagos survived a late scare from Remo Stars led by that man who has made it second nature to make an impact off the bench, Adams Olamilekan.
Sporting started on a bright note but there was nothing to separate both teams in at the break.
However, in the second half, it was the Noisy Lagosians who broke the deadlock when Chiemeka Nwokeji fired them ahead six minutes into the second half.
They held on to that lead until the dying moments when Remo Stars’ piled on the pressure to cause problems for them.
Olamilekan netted twice but the first was controversially disallowed as offside but his heroic moment came when he finally stole in from nowhere to net the decisive equaliser to force the game into shootout.
Despite his impact, Sporting and Nwoke denied him lasting happiness after the win via shootout.
Sporting finish unbeaten
Following the eventual win in the shootout, Sporting completed an invincible run to seal the win having won all but one, the draw against Enyimba in their opener.
The become the first team to win the Naija Super 8, receiving the giant trophy and a cash prize of N 25 million.
