I proved them wrong: Super Eagles defender Bassey shuts down teammates' jokes with perfect response
Fulham and the Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey, has reacted after making headlines following his first Premier League goal of the season in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.
The centre-back's decisive header not only secured three points for his team but also silenced his teammates' playful banter.
Bassey emerged as the hero of the day at Craven Cottage, where he showed his attacking instincts by heading home a corner flicked on by Raul Jimenez in the 62nd minute.
Reflecting on his performance, Bassey expressed pride in his contribution according to a report on the club’s website.
"The boys give me a bit of stick sometimes! But today I proved them wrong. For me, it’s a proud moment—my first goal this season."
He emphasised the importance of teamwork, stating, “We created a lot of chances, and I think we deserved the win. We tried to control the game.”
Bassey also highlighted the defensive strategy that was crucial against a counter-attacking Nottingham Forest side.
Despite conceding a goal to Chris Wood, who equalised for Forest before halftime, Bassey and his teammates maintained their composure and ensured they had each other's backs throughout the match.
It was a goal that kept Fulham’s push for European football alive. Bassey noted the team's focus on taking each game as it comes.
"Everyone always asks me about this European thing," he said. "Of course, our goal is to get there, but we’ve been a bit unlucky earlier in the season. Now, I think we’re getting our luck back through hard work."
With this victory, Fulham move up to eighth place in the Premier League standings, just five points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. .
