Taiwo Awoniyi: Super Eagles star celebrates wife on 7-year wedding anniversary after surviving death scare

Super Eagles star Taiwo Awoniyi has taken to social media to celebrate his wife Taiye Jesudun, on their wedding anniversary.

The Nottingham Forest forward shared his gratitude on social media, posting heartwarming images of him and his wife alongside a touching message. 

Awoniyi posted a photo of himself and his longtime partner on Instagram, accompanied by a caption that read:

"Proverbs 18:22. Happy Anniversary Wife me. Thank you @mrs_taiyeawoniyi... Ani melo melo, melo melo la fe wi? Melo melo, melo melo la fe so?” translating roughly to a playful expression of love and joy in their native tongue.

What made this moment even more special was the emotional and physical journey Awoniyi has endured in the last year.

 While celebrating a personal victory, he was also commemorating his miraculous recovery after a harrowing health scare earlier in the season.

The 2024/2025 Premier League season was one that Awoniyi—and many of his fans—will never forget.

During a match against Leicester City, Awoniyi sustained a life-threatening injury: a ruptured intestine that placed him in a medically induced coma.

 For days, the football world feared the worst, as reports of his condition circulated.

However, the 27-year-old Nigeria international defied all odds, battling back from the brink of death with incredible resilience. 

His wife Taiye, was a constant source of strength, standing by him through the darkest of hours.

Awoniyi's road to recovery was both physically and emotionally demanding. 

Yet, he managed to keep his spirits up, continuing his support for local charities and community projects around Nottingham.

As if his comeback wasn’t enough of a testament to his character, Awoniyi’s unwavering dedication to giving back earned him recognition off the pitch. 

In May 2025, he was honoured with the PFA Community Champion of the Year award. 

This prestigious accolade, presented annually by the Professional Footballers’ Association, is reserved for players who go above and beyond the sport to make a positive impact on society.

Awoniyi’s contribution to Nottingham was far from limited to his athletic performances. 

The striker’s commitment to various local causes, particularly in the face of his own hardships, solidified his reputation as a hero both on and off the pitch.

Now, with the football season over and his recovery complete, Awoniyi can finally enjoy some well-deserved time with his wife, and the couple’s anniversary celebration marks not just a personal triumph, but a reminder of resilience, love, and the power of faith.
