Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has publicly backed under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim, suggesting the Portuguese coach could be given up to two more years to turn the club's fortunes around.

The Red Devils have started the season poorly, having claimed only three wins in their first seven games of the season.

Amorim, who was appointed last November, has endured a challenging tenure, with the team securing just 19 wins from his 50 games in charge.

The club's recent form has left them tenth in the Premier League table, with only one win in each month.

Ratcliffe affirmed that his INEOS group, which controls football operations, will not make a rash decision.

He also stressed that the Glazer family, the club's majority owners, would not intervene to demand a managerial change.

"He has not had the best of seasons," Ratcliffe acknowledged in an interview with The Times' Business Podcast. "Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be."

Ratcliffe, whose INEOS group now manages the club's sporting direction, made it clear that decisions would be made locally, not from across the Atlantic where the Glazers are based. "It’s not going to happen," he said regarding a potential ownership-led dismissal. "We're here with feet on the ground."

The 73-year-old billionaire also voiced his frustration with media expectations, arguing against the demand for "overnight success".

"They think it's a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it's all going to be roses tomorrow," Ratcliffe stated.

"You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week."

Since INEOS acquired a minority stake on Christmas Eve 2023, Ratcliffe's leadership has faced criticism from fans and staff over redundancies, increased ticket prices and the relocation of long-standing season-ticket holders.
