Inter Miami CF coach Javier Mascherano has revealed that his team needs improvements following a dismal run of form that culminated in a chastening 4-1 loss to Minnesota United over the weekend.

The defeat marked Inter Miami's worst-ever loss in an MLS match, where Lionel Messi featured.

"I'm not going to be a hypocrite here and say everything's fine because obviously we don't like losing. I understand that we've lost four of the last five games and that there are things that need to be corrected," Mascherano told the media, reflecting the growing concern surrounding the team's recent performances.

The loss to Minnesota was the fourth defeat in their last five outings across all competitions for Inter Miami in the past three weeks. This poor stretch represents their worst run of form since a five-game winless streak earlier in 2024, raising questions about the team's cohesion and tactical approach.

Mascherano pinpointed the source of their struggles, stating, "I think many of the goals we've conceded, which are 14 in the last five games, have to do with inattention and individual errors, rather than a collective approach to defending."

Ahead of their midweek away fixture against the San Jose Earthquakes, the fourth-placed Eastern Conference side have shifted its focus towards rebuilding team cohesion and chemistry in an attempt to reverse their current slump.

"I think there's nothing better than spending these four or five days together right now, to be together, to talk, to do team building, to share moments that aren't common during the season, but which are important at certain times," Mascherano said.

As Inter Miami prepares for their clash with San Jose, the focus will be firmly on whether Mascherano can implement the necessary corrections to address their defensive vulnerabilities and reignite the team's winning form.
