Tragedy Strikes Ugandan School Sports as 5 Students Athletes Perish in Accident
The Ugandan sports community is in mourning after a tragic road accident on Tuesday claimed the lives of five student-athletes from Iki-Iki Senior Secondary School.
The incident occurred on the Mbale-Tirinya Highway at Jami, within Kamonkoli Town Council, as the students were traveling to a football tournament.
The team was on its way to compete in the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) games, which were being held at Kamonkoli Seed Secondary School in Budaka District.
According to eyewitness reports, the truck carrying the team, with registration number UAP 443Z, lost control and overturned. Five students were pronounced dead at the scene.
Other Students Sustain Injuries
Several other students suffered injuries and were immediately transported to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for emergency medical care.
Authorities have since arrested the truck driver, who is expected to face multiple charges, including reckless driving, overloading, and operating a vehicle in a dangerous mechanical condition.
The Iki-Iki SS team had been competing in Group D of the tournament. Prior to the accident, they had defeated Grace Comprehensive School 1-0 before losing a closely contested match to Bugwere High School. They were scheduled to face Iki-Iki High School and Ngoma Standard School later that day.
This devastating event comes just days after another tragedy struck the local football scene, where eight members of the Red Devo Football Club, including its CEO, died following their elimination from the Uganda Cup.
