Uganda President Raises the Bar with Higher CHAN 2024 Bonuses than Kenya and Tanzania

East African countries have put their best foot forward in a bid to motivate their players at the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) with Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania announcing lucrative bonuses.

Tanzania was the first nation to announce its reward scheme before Kenya followed and on Monday, hours before the Cranes begin their campaign with a tricky match against Algeria, Uganda President Yoweri Museveni unleashed his bonuses.

According to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), President Museveni will reward the squad Ush1.2 billion (ksh43 million) for every win at CHAN 2024, raising the stakes for the co-hosts.

“The President has announced a massive winning bonus of 1.2 billion shillings per match for the team at CHAN 2024! This was announced by FUFA President Hon Magogo Moses Hassim to the team. The bar has been set,” FUFA said via a social media post.

The reward scheme does not, however, go into details on whether the amount will increase if they advance past the group stage but it is higher than what both Kenya and Tanzania are offering for group stage wins.

Kenya’s President William Ruto has pledged to reward every player and member of the technical bench Ksh1 million for every group stage win and Kah500,000 for every draw while in Tanzania, President Samia Suluhu has set aside Tsh10 million (Ksh500,000) for every goal scored at the group stage and quarter-finals.

If Kenya’s Harambee Stars advance to the quarter-final, the squad will receive Ksh60 million, Ksh70 million for the semi-final while a tournament win will get them Ksh600 million.

Meanwhile in Tanzania, there is Tsh20 million (Ksh1 million) for every goal scored at the semi-finals, in addition to Tsh200 million (Ksh10 million) to the team for reaching the last four, while if they make it to the final, Tsh500 million (Ksh25 million) will be waiting for them.

If Taifa Stars become CHAN 2024 champions, President Suluhu has promised them Tsh1 billion (Ksh50 million).

Tanzania and Kenya have already done their bit by winning their opening matches against Burkina Faso and DR Congo respectively, with Taifa Stars receiving their bonuses on Sunday, and focus is on the Cranes as they tackle 2022 beaten finalists Algeria on Monday night (8pm kick off) in their opening match at Mandela National Stadium.
