UPL club in disarray as players abscond from duty

The StarTimes Uganda Premier League season might be 15 days away, but all is not well in the Maroons FC camp.

The Luzira-based side finds itself in a precarious situation, where players have absconded from duty, throwing the club's preparations ahead of the new season into disarray.

The players downed their tools because management should have paid their salaries for the past two months for a satisfactory reason, with the rest of the prison staff paid on time. Yet, they're all under the Government prison payment system. 

"It's a shame that the club administration is letting this happen. This has nothing to do with lack of funds but rather irresponsibility, and players won't accept that," a source that preferred anonymity told Pulse Sports.

Only 13 players attended the training session on Monday before the team's 3-1 home loss to Wakiso Giants FC the following day in the FUFA Super 8 classification game.

When contacted by Pulse Sports, Maroons FC CEO Rodrick Muhumuza remained tight-lipped on the matter but added that the situation was being handled. 

"The issue of salaries and bonuses is internal, and I can't dwell on it; the players know the situation at the club currently, and management shall resolve the issues at hand soon," Muhumuza noted.

Mohammed Ssenfuma's side, who finished sixth last season, put up a solid display at home, making the Prison's grounds in Luzira a fortress as they managed to pick up maximum points against top sides like KCCA FC, Vipers, SC Villa and URA FC.

Maroons opened their UPL account on 17th September, away from Wakiso Giants.
