We will do our best to exploit Nigeria’s struggles — Botswana coach declares ahead of crucial WAFCON match

Botswana coach Alex Malete remains hopeful ahead of a daunting clash against group favourites Nigeria in their second Group B fixture at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite a narrow opening loss to Algeria, Malete insists his team can still upset the odds and reach the knockout stages.

After a tough 1-0 loss to Algeria, Botswana's route to qualification is steep but still possible. Coach Alex Malete is preparing his side to face Nigeria, hoping that his team can remain calm, play to their strengths, and capitalise on any visible cracks in Nigeria’s setup.

“We have to be able to express ourselves,” Malete said, adding, “[We have to] look at Nigeria as well and see what they do well and see what they struggle with and do our best to use that to our advantage.

Botswana’s chances are strengthened by the return of crucial stars Lone Gaofetoge and Nandi Mahlasela, both of whom missed the opener due to suspension.

Despite the tough challenge ahead, Malete is encouraged by the positive energy in camp. “The spirit within the camp, the unity… It’s the environment for me that will ensure that we proceed to the next round,” he said.

The coach praised his players’ attitude and believes the team has prepared well to shock the group favourites.

Botswana must avoid defeat and ideally win one of their remaining matches to have the best chance of advancing, despite having the luxury of a potential best-loser slot.

With Nigeria up next on July 10 in Casablanca, the Mares are aware of the challenge but equally motivated to cause one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
