‘We're ready for the game’ - Troost-Ekong claims team is well prepared to face former head coach
Nigeria will face the Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The national team form have come into question, having only won once in their previous five games.
The team's most recent victory was over rival Ghana; they also drew with South Africa and lost to Mali and Benin.
Ekong confident
During the media round on Wednesday, Troost-Ekong stressed the importance of the players in winning.
According to AllNigeriasoccer, Troost-Ekong said, "I think it is our job. The coach adds to the team and organises the team, but the responsibility is the players.
“We're ready for the game, playing against Gernot Rohr, a coach that knows us very well, was with us up to five years, but we'll be ready for the game.”
Given Rohr's in-depth understanding of the strategies and players of the Super Eagles, Troost-Ekong voiced confidence in Nigeria's readiness for the game.
For the first time since the German head coach left the Nigerian senior men's national team in 2021, Troost-Ekong will face Rohr, and he is intent on winning.
Nigeria will be trying to recover from their June 2-1 setback to Benin Republic, which also played a part in former coach Finidi George's dismissal.
The Super Eagles, who are currently managed by Austin Eguavoen will be motivated to turn things around and win handily in Uyo.
