What else do you want? — Odemwingie slams Atalanta for Ademola Lookman situation
Ademola Lookman was desperate to leave Atalanta during the summer, but the club hierarchy refused to sanction a move for the reigning CAF Player of the Year.
Several European clubs, including Serie A rivals Inter Milan, explored a deal for the 27-year-old, but Atalanta stood firm in their refusal to sell their talisman to a direct rival.
There was a deadline day enquiry made by Bayern Munich, and reports of a potential loan move to Turkish side Galatasaray, but Atalanta reportedly showed no encouragement to the offers.
Odemwingie speaks on Lookman situation at Atalanta
Odemwingie believes the club’s stance was unfair to the player, who delivered an outstanding season. Speaking to Footy-Africa, the ex-Super Eagles forward made his feelings clear.
“Lookman has exceeded every expectation since joining Atalanta. The fair thing would have been to let him pursue the path he desired. They should have allowed him to follow his dream.”
Odemwingie argued that Lookman's contributions to the team should have been rewarded with a move.
“He’s played three full seasons, given his all, and even delivered European glory. What more could they have asked for? It doesn’t reflect well when a player who has carried the club on his shoulders is held back at this point in his career.”
Despite being denied his desired move, Lookman has been included in the club's Champions League squad, suggesting he could be reintegrated into the team.
The forward is currently with Eric Chelle's Super Eagles squad, preparing for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.
