You must qualify — NFF president reveals 4 targets set for Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach
NFF president Ibrahim Gusau has revealed the target that has been set for newly appointed Super Eagles head coach Finidi George.
The 53-year-old was unveiled as the new boss of the Nigerian national team on May 25th. It was speculated that he penned a one-year contract, which spurred doubts over how much the federation trusted his appointment; however, Gusau has now confirmed that he was contracted for two years.
What NFF president Gusau said
In a conversation on Soccer Africa, a football show in South Africa, the NFF top brass clarified that Finidi signed a two-year deal, as reported by Brilla FM.
He also listed the four contractual targets his initial two-year contract will be judged on.
Qualify for AFCON 2025
Reaching at least the semi-final of AFCON 2025
Qualify for the 2026 World Cup
Reach the quarter-final of the 2026 World Cup
“The key thing is, in every contract, there must be some indices and some targets that you must put in place for somebody in order for him to get optimal performance,” Gussau said on the show.
“And the first target is to qualify the team for next year’s Nations Cup and to get to at least the semi-finals of the Nations Cup, as well as qualify the team for the World Cup and to get us the target of playing in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Finidi is expected to call up his first squad as permanent manager soon for the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic in June.
