World Athletics started off their countdown on July 30 and they have been releasing 10 names every week.
World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge’s performance during the 2003 World Championships in Paris, France has been voted for by fans among the 40 greatest moments in the World Championships as they celebrate their 40th anniversary.
Kipchoge, against all odds, beat a strong field to reign supreme in the men’s 5000m. During the time Kenenisa Bekele had won the 10,000m, then Hicham El Guerrouj had taken the 1500m crown and then there was Kipchoge who had not won anything.
Bekele took the race out hard in an attempt to burn off his rivals as El Guerrouj stayed close to him. However, Kipchoge and defending champion Richard Limo were also following the duo in close range.
Kipchoge was going nowhere, and on the final lap he was sandwiched between the two world champions, Bekele now in third. The trio entered the home straight pretty much level and as they approached the finish line, it was Kipchoge who managed to edge ahead.
He took gold in a championship record of 12:52.79 as El Guerrouj took silver and Bekele the bronze. It was to be the only global title that Kipchoge won on the track, but less than a decade later he turned his attention to the marathon and never looked back.
Others who have been selected among the numbers 11 to 20 include Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Tirunesh Dibaba, Kenenisa Bekele, and Dafne Schippers. Jonathan Edwards, Ashton Eaton, Tobi Amusan, Mike Powell, and Mutaz Barshim have also made it to the list.

Thousands of fans took part, and the votes have now been counted, and four-time world champion Elias Kemboi has made it to the first list that is out.
World Athletics started off their countdown on July 30 and they have been releasing 10 names every week. The remaining 10 athletes will be revealed next Friday, July 21.
