The event will also serve as a qualifier for the national team for the upcoming World Road Running Championships, scheduled for the end of September and the beginning of October in Riga, Latvia.

Action in the local athletics scene will return to Jinja City this weekend for the Source of the Nile Half Marathon.

National stars are expected to converge in Jinja to compete for titles in the 21km race on Sunday morning.

“The portal is now open for online registration for Source of the Nile Half Marathon due this Sunday 26/Feb/2023 in jinja and will automatically close on Friday 24/02/2023 at 11:59 pm,” Namayo Mawerere, the deputy general secretary at Uganda Athletics Federation called for athletes to register.

Qualifiers

The event will also serve as a qualifier for the national team for the upcoming World Road Running Championships, scheduled for the end of September and the beginning of October in Riga, Latvia.

“Uganda Athletics Federation is expected to field full teams (men and women) to represent the country in the World Half Marathon due this year in October in Riga, Latvia,” she added.

Last year's men's race was won by Ali Chebures from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, who beat his teammate Geoffrey Kusuro and Abel Chebet with a time of 1 hour and 2.0 minutes.

Meanwhile, Mercyline Chelangat from Police, who also won the 2022 National Cross Country Championship, is the reigning women's champion.

Last year’s event attracted about 155 competitors mainly dominated by male runners.
