The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon has taken a monumental step towards gaining international acclaim as it approaches its certification by World Athletics.

Spearheading this significant endeavour is Garvin Ashworth, one of the premier route measurers on the continent, tasked with the comprehensive evaluation and measurement of the marathon’s course in Kasese.

The certification which took place today marks a significant milestone in the marathon's journey toward global recognition by World Athletics.

Ashworth, 66, known for his thoroughness in measuring and evaluating routes, brings years of expertise to the table.

With accreditation from World Athletics, his role is crucial in ensuring the precision and fairness of the marathon course.

The certification process that started on Saturday, 23rd March involves accurately measuring the marathon route, evaluating its layout, elevation changes, and other factors affecting the race.

Ashworth meticulously surveyed each kilometre, utilizing cutting-edge technology and methodologies endorsed by World Athletics.

Upon completion and verification by World Athletics, the certified Rwenzori Marathon route will join an elite group of globally recognised courses.

This accreditation not only enhances the event's prestige but also provides elite athletes with a platform to compete and set records on an internationally acclaimed course.

"Once I complete all measurements and documentation, I'll submit everything to World Athletics for route certification," Ashworth explained.

Ashworth, who boasts experience measuring routes in various iconic locations like Kilimanjaro and Victoria Falls, highlights the unique allure of the Mt Rwenzori Marathon route.

He emphasises its distinctiveness and attractiveness compared to others he has assessed.

"Every route has its own beauty and unique characteristics, but this particular one stands out for its undeniable attractiveness. It's truly beautiful and stunning—I dare say, one of the finest in all of Africa," Ashworth conceded.

The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is the first one to be measured and assessed by an official from World Athletics, something that has excited Amos Wekesa, Director at Equator Hikes and leader of the Tusker Lite marathon team.

"This is a very exciting time for Uganda," Wekesa said, adding, "This allows the marathon to be featured on the World Athletics website as one of the marathons with a certified route.

This brings numerous advantages, as some elite runners choose not to participate in marathons without certified routes."

Expressing his enthusiasm for the certification process, Roy Tumwizere, the Tusker Lite brand representative, remarked.

"We are honoured to have this certification process months before the third edition of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon. This recognition signifies the growing prominence of the marathon, and amazing opportunities of growth that lie ahead."

Julius Nkuraija, the Course Director, commended Ashworth's contribution to maintaining international standards and announced exciting changes to this year's marathon route.

"We are delighted to announce that the 42km race will now start at the Equator, a unique feature that sets us apart. Additionally, a 10km race has been introduced to accommodate a broader range of participants," Nkuraija revealed.

The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon, slated for Saturday, 24th August 2024, promises to be a spectacular event, showcasing the beauty of the Kasese region and offering participants a world-class running experience on a certified route.
