Uganda Athletics Federation president Dominic Otucet, has urged security organizations to enroll athletes from their clubs onto their payroll.

Otucet made this appeal during the 7th edition of the Eastern Region/Patrick Etolu Memorial track and field competition held at the Soroti sports grounds.

“Those clubs that are able to give our athletes jobs, I appreciate you, but I request you to enroll them in the payroll to avoid unnecessary movement of athletes from one club to another,” Otucet told New Vision.

According to Otucet, security forces with clubs like Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons, and Uganda Wildlife Authority, take long to add them to the payroll system.

Which he feels would prevent the unnecessary movement of athletes from one club to another, ensuring stability and consistent support for the athletes' careers.

The annual track and field championship, named in memory of Patrick Etolu, a prominent Ugandan athlete who represented the nation in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, was a fitting backdrop for Otucet's call.

The competition brought together 17 teams from various regions, including schools, private clubs, and tertiary institutions hailing from districts such as Amuria, Soroti, Kalaki, Bukedea, Kapelebyong, Kumi, Soroti, and Kaberemaido.

"As Athletics Federation, we are committed to ensuring our athletes' welfare and development. Stable employment is essential for their long-term growth and success in their respective sports," Otucet emphasized.

"This is an opportunity for athletes to gain financial stability and focus on their training and development," he added.

This edition of the Eastern Region/Patrick Etolu Memorial event held particular significance as the Uganda Athletics Federation granted it the status of a national qualifier competition.

This designation allows participating athletes to accumulate valuable points toward their qualification for major international competitions, showcasing the growing stature of Ugandan athletics on the global stage.
