An inside source has revealed to Pulse Sports that the federation is cash-strapped and unable to facilitate the team for the competition in West Africa.

Uganda is still celebrating the success registered by three of her teams in different competitions that happened in the last few weeks.

The She Cranes finished fifth at the Netball World Cup to become number one in Africa, while the Uganda Gazelles finished seventh at the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda, their best placement ever.

The Bombers team brought home seven medals from the 2023 Africa Confederations Boxing Championship held in Yaounde, Cameroon, to raise Uganda’s flag.

Attention will now shift to the national basketball team, Silverbacks, which is scheduled to compete in the 2023 FIBA Basketball Pre-Olympics Qualifying Tournament in Lagos, Nigeria.

Uganda is in Group A alongside Senegal, Mali and hosts Nigeria and must be in Lagos before the first game is played on August 14.

But it is looking unlikely that the team will make the trip, with the federation having no resources to fund the trip.

An inside source has revealed to Pulse Sports that the federation is cash-strapped and unable to facilitate the team for the competition in West Africa.

This comes at a time most of Uganda’s professional players had indicated they would be available for selection.

It is not the first time a Ugandan team is struggling to get funding for a major competition. The Silverbacks missed out on the FIBA AfroCAN qualifiers in Dar es Salam, Tanzania, earlier this year.

There has yet to be any communication from FUBA regarding the trip, but highly-placed sources revealed that it is doubtful the team will travel.

The tournament in Nigeria will run from August 14 to 20, and the winner will book a ticket to the Olympics Qualifying Tournament.
