Gavi scored to give Spain a slender win over Norway, but the midfielder has admitted that his goal could have been ruled out

Barcelona youngster Gavi scored the only goal in Oslo as Spain pipped Norway 1-0 to confirm their ticket to the 2024 European Championships, but the 19-year-old admitted that there may have been something wrong with his goal.

Spain overcome Norway after Gavi magic

Spain laboured for the victory against Norway, as they were only able to muster two shots on goal despite having two-thirds of the possession in Oslo.

The winning goal for La Roja eventually came four minutes after the half-time break, but even that was not without drama.

During the first period, forward Alvaro Morata had a moment to forget when he thought he had scored Spain’s opening goal by tapping into an open goal following a deflection from Norway defender Stefan Strandberg.

However, the goal was chalked off, with Morata found to be in an offside position when he interfered with the ball that was already headed for an open goal.

Gavi scores controversial winner

Morata made up for the error after the half-time, albeit inadvertently, as the ball bounced off him in the Norway box to find an unmarked Gavi, who fired home to win the game for La Roja.

Even Spain’s winner was not without controversy, as the referee had to consult with VAR to ensure that Morata was not offside once again.

The goal was eventually given, but goalscorer Gavi was still sceptical about the decision, confessing after the match that he was unsure about Morata being in an offside position.

Following the match against Norway, Gavi told Marca, “My goal came from Morata’s action in the box, I don’t know if he was offside. In the end, we got the goal, and I’m happy about it.”

Spain were able to overcome the threat of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who was restricted to only two shots throughout the 90 minutes against the former World Champions.

The loss to Spain puts Norway’s chances of reaching the 2024 Euros in the balance, as the Norwegians now need to book a place in next year’s tournament through the UEFA Nations League path.
