Bordeaux are keen on keeping Nigerian forward Josh Maja with them in Ligue 2 going into the new season

French side Bordeaux are gearing up to extend the contract of Nigerian forward Josh Maja, who helped them to the brink of Ligue 1 promotion this season.

Bordeaux miss out on Ligue 1

Maja scored 16 goals in Ligue 2 as Bordeaux aimed for promotion to Ligue 1 by claiming one of the top two spots, but the striker's efforts to get his club back into the top flight were given a death blow after a fan invasion caused their final match of the season.

Bordeaux needed a win in their last game of the season against Rodez, but with the opponents in the lead, a Bordeaux fan ran onto the pitch and attacked Rodez’ Lucas Buades, leaving the player with a concussion and forcing the match to be stopped midway through.

Rather than having the game replayed or restarted from the point it was halted, the league’s governing body decided that the match should be nullified, leaving Bordeaux three points short of qualification for Ligue 1 next season.

Bordeaux looking to keep Maja

Despite this setback, Les Girondins are confident that they can tie some of their best players to new contracts as they look to make a new attempt to leave Ligue 2 in the 2023/24 season.

Maja, whose contract expires this summer, is one of the important players Bordeaux aim to keep, and the club have reportedly offered him an extension on his current deal

The Nigerian forward has attracted interest from teams in Ligue 1 and across Europe after an impressive season and a potential free transfer and it will be tough for Bordeaux to convince him to remain at the club.
