Nigeria and Super Eagles legend Mutiu Adepoju weighed in on the issue of racism in the LALIGA.

Nigerian football legend Mutiu Adepoju has emphasised his time playing in Spain, insisting he never encountered racism during his LaLiga career.

Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that the former Super Eagles star, nicknamed the 'Headmaster', spoke to journalists worldwide as a LaLiga ambassador at the African Players Forum.

Super Eagles legend talks on racism in LALIGA

Adepoju spent several years plying his trade in Spain's top flight with clubs like Real Sociedad and Racing Santander after starting life in Spain with Real Madrid B in the 1990s.

But the 53-year-old was unequivocal when asked about the racist abuse that has marred the Spanish game in recent years.

"I never experienced racism in LaLiga,” he said during an interactive session with journalists on the latest LALIGA initiative on Zoom ahead of the clash between his former club Real Sociedad and Cadiz. 

“I didn't have that problem in the streets, at Real Sociedad, Racing Santander, none of my family members experienced that. We were loved," Adepoju added.

It's a reassuring perspective from one of Nigeria's all-time greats who enjoyed a celebrated career at the highest level in Spain.

Adepoju first announced himself on the world stage at the 1989 FIFA U20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia, where his three goals fired the Flying Eagles to the final.

He'd go on to play a pivotal role in Nigeria's triumphant 1994 Africa Cup of Nations campaign before earning his LaLiga moves.

While contentious, Adepoju's stance aligns with Spanish football's intent to confront racism and discrimination through robust rules and educational campaigns.
