AFC Leopards supporters are filled with excitement as the club begins commemorating 60 years since its inception with an elaborate 12-day ceremony.

AFC Leopards fans are looking forward to a fun-filled week as the club starts celebrating its 60th anniversary on Tuesday.

Leopards’ 60th birthday celebrations will start with a visit to children’s homes in Nairobi before heading to Shauri Moyo where the club’s founder Israel Motoka lived and will culminate in a friendly match against Spanish fourth-tier side AE Ramassa on March 24.

“We will visit three children’s homes, in Westlands, Makadara and Dagoretti as a way of giving back to the society,” said Leopards CEO Albert Wesonga.

The club has invited fans from across the country as well as corporate organisations and well-wishers to support in making the celebrations a landmark event through partnerships and collaboration.

The festivities will last 12 days and are designed to pay homage to the club's storied history and impressive list of achievements with the match against AE Ramassa being preceded by a contest against Gor Mahia Legends.

"On March 12, we will cut the cake in a ceremony that welcomes our fans and celebrates our heritage. We are also organising a dinner at the Maa Hotel in Nairobi with Luhya leaders on March 22 to honour our roots and traditions," added Wesonga of the anniversary itinerary, which also includes inter-branch competitions whose finals will take place on Saturday March 23 at Camp Toyoyo grounds.

Leopards branches will also be engaged in a tree-plating initiative throughout the year with the target being two million trees.

“Ingwe at 60 is a celebration that we will be doing the whole of this year. We have fun games but also CSR initiatives,” said Leopards executive branch secretary general Hosea Kisienya.

“However, moving forward as a club, we would like to see us go corporate because we have been stuck at one place for so long. Our biggest undoing has been our structure, a corporate model would really change how we operate,” he added.

Founded on March 12, 1964, Leopards are one of the most popular clubs in Kenya and East Africa and boasts of a rich legacy with 12 league titles, 10 domestic cups, and five CECAFA Club Championships.

However, Ingwe’s last league title was won in 1998 and it is seven years since their last major trophy.
