The Football Writers Association has awarded Phil Foden Footballer of the Year in recognition of his exceptional season.

The Manchester City star has scored 16 goals and provided 7 assists for the Citizens as they look to win two trophies this season.

After Erling Haaland last season and Ruben Dias in 2021, Foden is the third Etihad player in the last four years to win the FWA award, which Sir Stanley Matthews first won in 1948.

Members of the FWA appreciated Foden's efforts, as he received 42% of the vote and was awarded the esteemed title, as reported by the Sun.

Second place went to Declan Rice, his England teammate who has had a fantastic debut season at Arsenal.

Rodri, Foden's teammate at City who hasn't dropped a game in fifteen months, came in third.

The top six included Cole Palmer of Chelsea, Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, and Martin Odegaard of Arsenal.

After winning the award, Foden said, “Being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year is a huge honour.

“I’m very, very happy to receive this award but I could not have done it without the help of my teammates. We have a very special squad of players at City, and I’m privileged to be a part of that group.

“I want to thank all my teammates as well as Pep and the coaches for all the support and advice they have given me.

“I strive to be the best that I can be every single day and that is all down to the way the manager and my colleagues always seek to improve and get better.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me as well as my fellow nominees.”

Foden will be honoured at the Footballer of the Year dinner in London on Thursday, May 16.
