The biggest signing from the transfer market is head coach Wasswa Bbosa, a seasoned campaigner who guided Express FC to the league and CECAFA Cup double in the 2020/21 season.

Mbarara City Football Club are back in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League after one year away in the wilderness.

The Ankole Lions were relegated in the 2021/22 season to end their five-year stay in the top flight and returned to the FUFA Big League for the 2022/23 campaign.

But the Kakyeka-based side needed just one season to prove too big for the second tier and return to the big table.

Mbarara City confirmed their place in the division after a stellar season in the Big League, which saw them promoted with a game to spare.

Under the stewardship of Sadiq Ssempigi, the Ankole Lions relied on the prowess of forward Henry Kitegenyi, the experience of Jude Semugabi and Solomon Okwalinga, and the industry of Ibrahim Thembo to reclaim their place.

Changes

But the new season in the UPL will start with several changes having taken place at the club. Several players have since left, while others have come in to steer the ship forward.

The biggest signing from the transfer market is head coach Wasswa Bbosa, a seasoned campaigner who guided Express FC to the league and CECAFA Cup double in the 2020/21 season.

The tactician was at Gaddafi FC last season and comes in with a wealth of top-flight experience under his sleeves.

To oversee the task, Bbosa has been equipped with players who have played in the top flight and know what it means to be at this level.

Joseph Akandwanaho headlines the new-look squad that also features the returning Innocent Wafula.

Richard Wandyaka, Pius Kaggwa and Yunus Sibira are the other new faces expected to light up Kakyeka and help the Ankole Lions in their quest for success this season.

FOOTBALL Why Kankonde dumped KCCA FC

The Congolese forward disappeared after KCCA FC's 3-2 win over S.C Villa in the FUFA Super 8 third/fourth place playoff and has since not returned to the side.

The team is, however, without some of the key pieces from last season. Semugabi, Okwalinga, Thembo, Bronson Nsubuga and Hakim Magombe are some of the players who have since parted ways with Mbarara City.

But even then, Mbarara City will fancy their chances of maintaining their league status when the season kicks off on Friday.

Having been given the green light to use their Kakyeka Stadium to host home matches, the club will focus on making it a fortress to garner as many points as possible and avoid relegation talk.

To start the campaign, Wasswa Bbosa and his charges will go up against another newly promoted side, NEC FC, on Friday.
