Every training session at Maroons FC starts with players standing akimbo as they listen attentively to a commanding voice on how the day's warm up drills session will be done.

'Move in line and at the same pace', Maxwell Okello's commanding voice echoes as players run through the paces with a keen eye monitoring every movement.

Okello, a product of the Maroons football youth system, quit active football in 2021 to become a fitness trainer, a decision he believes was good.

"I love football, so I decided to start my coaching badges when I was at my prime because I felt it was the right time for me," he noted before adding.

"I now have my CAF C license, but I also did a course in fitness which I have been able to practice here at Maroons FC since last season, and I love every bit of it."

The 31-year-old former centre back now focuses on ensuring that the players are fit and mentally ready during the Star Times Uganda Premier League second round.

"It's a game-by-a-game situation because a lot has to be considered under fitness for players to be 100% fit, like feeding and recovery, but I am committed, and 95% of the team is doing well."

Okello's exploits have been appreciated by players and his fellow technical team members, especially the head coach Mohammed Ssenfuma.

"Okello has been so pivotal for us; he has ensured that the players' fitness is at the required level, which is a huge factor because was didn't have that human resource before," Ssenfuma noted.

Midfielder Abel Etrude, who returned to the side until the end of the season in the January window, also credits Okello for helping him regain his fitness.

"Maxwell is good at what he does; when I arrived, I needed to catch up with the rest through fitness, and he did a great job ensuring I was ready for the second round," Etrude told this website.

The Luzira-based side got their league second round campaign on a good note with a 1-0 win over Busoga United at the FUFA technical centre in Njeru.

Maroons FC next faces Soltilo Bright Stars on 24th February, and Maxwell Okello will be expected to have prepared the side to earn maximum points as their quest to stay in the top flight continues.
