Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda launched an 'East Africa Pamoja' bid to host the 2027 AFCON in May.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa has revealed what Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia will require in order to meet the standards required to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

On Monday, 22 May, Kenya alongside her East Africa neighbors Tanzania and Uganda, announced a joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

It was revealed that the two Nairobi-based stadia, as well as the Kipchoge Keino stadium in Eldoret, would be handpicked to host the tournament.

Mwendwa revealed the plans for the renovation of the three stadia, stating the sophisticated level of renovation they would have to go through in order to meet CAF’s requirements.

“For Nyayo and Kasarani, the first thing we need is proper international level lighting so that games will be played at night. The lighting at the moment is not good enough and in Nyayo, there is no lighting. It is quite expensive, but it can be done quickly,” Mwendwa said.

“Nyayo Stadium will need to be roofed so that people cannot be rained on during the match because the level of production is no joke. For instance, the quality of pictures would be different with roofing.

“Nyayo and Kasarani will require ticketing systems and infrastructure. This will require someone to have a pre-ticket and mark the specific seat he will sit on.

“There will be printing of tickets that have barcodes specifically designated to direct you where you will seat, which is a lot of work because the whole stadium will have to be wired with a ticketing system that will specify where fans will sit.

“The pitch at Nyayo is bumpy at the moment, for example. Both stadia will be recarpeted with new grass that will take six to seven months to grow.

“We are renovating the three stadia, with the Kip Keino one as backup in case it is not completed on time. Other things like the technical bench, the sitting arrangement, the VIP sections, the media booths, the washrooms, dressing rooms and medical areas will also be renovated," said Mwendwa in an interview with K24.

Mwendwa admitted that it would require a lot of work and resources, but revealed optimism it would happen as he exuded “confidence” in the current government to walk the talk.

“It is a lot of work, but it can be done. Kasarani will not require as much renovation as Nyayo, but it will need work. The drainage will also be replaced. The cabinet secretary will commence work immediately. As a committee, we cannot handle infrastructure, but the president handed the mandate to him in my presence."

Around Ksh.2 billion has been set aside to renovate the Nyayo National Stadium, while Ksh. 1 billion has been allocated for the renovation of the Kasarani Stadium.
