The President expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring the East Africa nations beat their rivals to host the continental tournament

President William Ruto is confident that the joint bid between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be a success.

While expressing Kenya’s commitment to ensuring the bid goes through, Ruto said Kenya has put in place a good plan that will see the region host a successful tournament which has been christened EAC Pamoja Bid.

“We have joined our brothers and sisters in Uganda and Tanzania in mounting a joint bid to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the opportunity to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. None of us has had an opportunity to host this tournament before,” Ruto said on Monday.

“We hope our joint bid will motivate all our sides not only to qualify for the 2027 tournament but to excel by our individual countries. We intend to submit a compelling bid that will succeed in winning us this opportunity to make Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania the epicenters of regional and continental football resurgence.

“The work of submitting our joint bid begins and Kenya intends to make its contribution. My CS Ababu Namwamba is dully assigned to mobilise his counterparts in Uganda and Tanzania to formulate a winning bid so that people of our three countries can look forward in participating in a successful 2027 tournament.”

While not providing much details about how the government plans to improve infrastructure, especially the stadiums, the President remains confident that East Africa will beat Algeria, Egypt and Botswana, who are the competing countries for the bid.

“I am very confident that for the very first time, East Africa will host a successful 2027 tournament. We know that we have competitors from the continent but I am very confident that this bid that brings together East African solidarity will be a success,” he added.

“I have already consulted with my counterparts in Uganda and Tanzania to jointly bid and we will compete with different countries. We will work on mechanics of ensuring that we are all ready for this tournament when it happens.”

The interested nations have until Tuesday, May 23 to submit their bids after which CAF will determine who is ready following a number of inspections on facilities and infrastructure.
