The Ghana Football Federation has been flooded with over 600 applications from candidates seeking to replace Englishman Chris Hughton as Black Stars coach

Over 600 candidates have submitted their application to be considered for the vacant position of Ghana national team coach.

Ghana is looking for a coach for the Black Stars following the dismissal of Englishman Chris Hughton in the wake of the country’s group stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana parted ways with Hughton, who was confirmed as coach in February last year, after serving as technical director, following a second straight group stage exit when they managed just two points from a Group B that had Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.

Following his exit, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) formed a five-member committee, led by vice president Mark Addo, to identify and appoint a suitable candidate within 21 days and they have a big job on their hands after being flooded with over 600 applications from home and abroad.

Reports in Ghana claim candidates from Africa, Europe, North and South America have sent their applications with veteran German coach Felix Magath, the former Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg tactician, Croatian Nikola Jurcevic, former West Ham coach, among the high-profile names.

Former Black Stars assistant coach Maxwell Konadu and Michael Osei are the two local coaches who have submitted their applications.

The GFA will need to carefully select a suitable candidate after coming under fire from Ghanaians over the manner in which the Black Stars have been handled, added to the dismal results.

Ghana lost 2-1 to Cape Verde before identical 2-2 draws against both Egypt and Mozambique put paid to their AFCON campaign.
