Samuel Eto'O watched Cameroon's Indomitable Lions avoid heartbreak to reach the AFCON 2023 knockout stage against the Gambia.

Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o was overcome with emotion in the dressing room as he celebrated the Indomitable Lions’ narrow escape against the Gambia.

The former AFCON winner was seen in tears, embracing players and officials after a dramatic 3-2 victory against Gambia in the final game of the group stage on Tuesday.

Eto’s emotional moment

Ligue 1-based Christopher Wooh was the star and hero of the night after his late header sealed a dramatic victory for the Lions and a place in the next round in the five-goal thriller.

Eto'o, who is now federation president, was jubilant as Cameroon went from possible elimination to clinching a spot in the knockout stage.

After the match, CAF posted an emotional video of the African legend praising the team for showing their lion spirit with a last-gasp fightback.

“Samuel Eto’o got emotional with his boys’ comeback!” CAF posted on Instagram alongside the video of Eto’o and the Indomitable Lions.

Cameroon at AFCON

With no wins in their opening two matches, a draw against Guinea and a defeat to Senegal - Cameroon needed maximum points against the Scorpions to keep their AFCON dreams alive.

The Lions started positively when Karl Toko Ekambi opened the scoring in the 56th minute.

But two goals in the space of 13 minutes quickly turned the game around and in favour of the Gambians with five minutes left to play.

Rigobert Song's side reacted well to going behind and were handed a lifeline when they equalised two minutes after Gambia’s second goal thanks to a James Gomez own goal.

Determined to continue their charge for a sixth AFCON title, Wooh struck in added time to restore Cameroon’s lead in remarkable fashion to throw the Lions bench into a frenzy.

The Gambia equalised again but Cameroon had the VAR to thank after it spotted that Gambia’s Mohammed Sanneh scored with his hand and ruled out the goal at the death as the Indomitable secured the maximum points that guaranteed qualification.
