Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy has resigned his job at Dutch Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven after a year in charge

Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy has resigned from his job at Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, the club has announced.

The Manchester United legend has enjoyed a relatively successful debut at PSV, winning the Dutch KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield (Dutch Super Cup), beating giants Ajax Amsterdam in both finals.

Media reports suggest there has been unrest in the dressing rooms and the club has not offered him enough support.

“Head coach Ruud van Nistelroy announced this morning that he is leaving PSV,” the club announced in a brief statement.

“PSV regrets his decision and is grateful to him for winning the Johan Cruijff Shield and the TOTO KNVB Cup and hopes to finish the season with second place,” PSV added.

The 46-year-old has been in charge of 51 games registering 33 wins and eight losses.

Nistelrooy led the team to the group stages of the Europa League, where they finished second behind Arsenal in Pool A.

They, however, failed to beat eventual finalists Sevilla in the playoff rounds to bow out.

He leaves them 2nd on the 18-team Eredivisie and on the verge of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League playoffs.

PSV need to forget about his departure and avoid a loss in their last game away to AZ Alkmaar to seal their spot ahead of Ajax.
