The former Harambee Stars player and coach explains how Kenya can qualify for international tournaments regularly.

Former Harambee Stars coach and current KCB tactician Zedekiah Zico Otieno believes investing in youth is the only way Harambee Stars will become competitive and stay strong sustainably for years to come.

The vastly experienced tactician who also played for Harambee Stars back in his heyday further explained where the rain started beating the national football team in the aftermath of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament Kenya was initially meant to host before it was moved to South Africa.

“When we missed the chance to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996, there was a generation in that period that faded away that was very talented, the likes of Francis Oduor, Tony Lwanga, Sammy Omollo, Mike Okoth, Iddi Abakar and I,” Zico said.

“ I think that was the first time we beat Congo away for the first time through the late Patrick Nachok. That team was very organized with young talented players at the 1994 qualifiers.”

Zico reminisced what former Kenya head coach Mohammed Kheri always used to insist on when he was still coach on the importance of investment in the youth as a way of making Kenya competitive in future.

“Coach Mohammed Kheri always used to insist on Youth development any time he was questioned by journalists at the airport. It has now been 30 years since he insisted on that.

“I know youth development can work because I worked with the youth back home (in Kariobangi) when I started coaching and some of those boys ended up making the national level, the likes of Anthony ‘Modo’ Kimani, Kevin ‘Masta’ Ochieng, Hillary Wandera and Joseph Nyaga. I coached these boys when they were 13 years old.

“If we can stick to that and invest into the development of youth players, we can actually become a mainstay as Harambee Stars in future tournaments.”

Harambee Stars will take part at the Mauritius four nations series this week, where they will face Pakistan on Wednesday and the hosts on Sunday.
