Having finished fifth in last weekend's round, the target for Uganda remains to get into the top four.

Clashes between the Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens and Germany have turned into a derby of sorts.

With the two countries fighting to get core status in the HSBC World Series, meetings between them keep coming.

Germany got the better of Uganda for the second time in seven days when the two sides met Saturday afternoon in the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

The European country scored a try in each half to win their Pool C clash 12-00 while keeping Tolbert Onyango's charges scoreless for the first time in the tournament.

Aaron Ofoyrwoth let frustration get the better of him and kicked the ball away to delay proceedings, which earned him a yellow card to disrupt Uganda's charge further.

Germany had a 05-00 lead with a minute to play, and Adrian Kasito failed to get a good pick from a scrum, inviting pressure that saw the ball turned over.

Playing with a man down, Uganda lacked the numbers to stop Germany when the ball was spread to the wing for the final try with the game's last play.

The loss is Uganda's first this weekend and means Germany will top the pool going into the knockout phase of the competition.

Meanwhile, the game marked the start of Ian Munyani's reign as the Uganda Sevens captain after taking over from Michael Wokorach on Friday.

The Kobs centre was in front as the Cranes ran on while his predecessor Michael Wokorach was the last man to run onto the pitch.

Having finished fifth in last weekend's round, the target for Uganda remains to get into the top four.

The World Challenger Series provides a pathway to the HSBC World Rugby Series Circuit, something Uganda has been pushing to get to since 2017 when they played in the World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong.

The competition's winner will be decided on aggregate points over the two events and enter a four-team playoff at the HSBC London Sevens in May, together with the teams placed 12th to 14th after 10 rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2023.

The winner of the playoff will then achieve the coveted Sevens World Series 2024 status.
