Uganda Rugby Union has paid its respect to Cedric Babu, a prominent Ugandan sports advocate and PLU leader who passed away.

Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has joined in the mourning of Cedric Babu Ndilima, a prominent sports advocate and political figure in the East African Nation.

Babu died on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, after a long battle with severe heart failure at the age of 46.

The news of his death has sent shockwaves across the nation, especially among sports enthusiasts, where Babu had established himself as a dynamic and inspirational figure.

Babu was widely respected for his tireless efforts to promote sport as a tool for youth empowerment and community development.

His contributions were especially felt in rugby and football circles, where he championed grassroots programs and youth leagues.

URU was among the first organisations to officially mourn his passing, posting a tribute on their official X (formerly Twitter) page.

“URU mourns the passing of Cedric Babu, a passionate advocate for sport, a dedicated leader, and a true son of Uganda. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire sporting fraternity. May his legacy continue to inspire generations.”

Babu served in various capacities in the sports industry, including leadership roles within sports federations and as a mentor to young athletes.

In addition to his work in sports, Babu held a leadership position within the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), where he served as Vice Chairman for Kampala.

He was instrumental in using sports as a strategic mobilization tool to engage young people in politics and national development.

“He was a sports enthusiast, and sports was one of the channels we were using to mobilise the youth in PLU,” said Michael Mawanda, the PLU’s Director of Mobilisation as quoted by Pulse Uganda.

“He was the patron of the PLU Sports Club. That was why he was keen to contest in Kampala in the coming elections.”

Babu was reportedly preparing to run for political office in Kampala in the upcoming elections, furthering his long-standing commitment to public service and leadership.

The family has announced funeral plans as the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its most energetic and beloved sons, as the late is set to be laid on Saturday.
