Kenya's Nondies Legends narrowly overcame Uganda's Rugby Legends select side to claim a narrow advantage ahead of their second leg clash in Nairobi in September for the 2025 Legends Cup.

Kenya’s Nondies Legends secured a hard-fought 19-17 victory over Uganda Rugby Legends in a tense first leg of the 2025 SportPesa Legends Cup held at Kyadondo Rugby Football Club in Kampala on Saturday afternoon.

Coming into the clash as defending champions, the Kenyan side showed their pedigree by edging their rivals in front of a partisan Ugandan crowd, extending their impressive run in the annual veterans’ showdown.

The narrow win keeps the Nondies Legends in the driver’s seat ahead of the return leg scheduled for September 27 in Nairobi, where they’ll look to seal a third straight Legends Cup triumph.

Kenya previously dominated the series, winning the 2023 edition 69-18 on aggregate and following up with a 50-30 aggregate victory in 2024, which included a convincing 24-15 win at the RFUEA Grounds in the return leg.

Guided by head coach Oscar Osir and captained by Eddie Omondi, the Kenyan team featured a mix of experience and flair with the likes of Wilson K’opondo, Tony Owuor, and Vincent Mose.

They were further boosted by the presence of former Kenya Sevens ace Edwin “Pablo” Machanje and investigative journalist John-Allan Namu, who has been a vocal supporter of rugby in Kenya.

Uganda, led by veteran hooker Alex Mubiru — the most decorated player in the country’s rugby history — had their own heavy hitters, including African champions Victor Wadia and Michael Wokorach.

The home side, backed by a lively crowd, came close to pulling off a memorable result but fell just short in a closely contested battle.

The final whistle confirmed a 19-17 win for the visitors, setting the stage for a blockbuster second leg in Nairobi, where Uganda will seek redemption and Kenya will aim to close out another historic Legends Cup campaign on home soil.
