A Liverpool fan in a wheelchair hurled a racist slur towards Semenyo as he was going to take a throw-in during the first half of the Premier League opener that Arne Slot’s men won 4-2.

The Liverpool fan was later thrown out by police with the incident being met with worldwide condemnation and the Bournemouth forward has now broken his silence.

“Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever - not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together,” Semenyo posted on social media.

Semenyo Comments on Racism Incident at Anfield

“To my @afcbournemouth teammates who supported me in that moment, to the @LiverpoolFC players and fans who showed their true character, to the @premierleague officials who handled it professionally - thank you. Football showed its best side when it mattered most.”

Bournemouth went down 2-0 inside 49 minutes after new signing Hugo Ekitike and Gody Gakpo gave Liverpool the lead but Semenyo led a second half fightback, scoring twice to level the scores, before Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah’s late goals sealed the win for Liverpool.

“Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play - for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be,” Semenyo added.

“The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together.”

The racist incident is under investigation with the fan facing a possible life ban from the stadium although that has not stopped racism as Semenyo has still received monkey emojis on social media following the controversy.
