Arsenal set to hand Gyokeres iconic shirt number as Gunners finally reach ‘total agreement’ for striker
Arsenal have reportedly struck a deal to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, with a medical now scheduled for the weekend.
The Swedish forward is expected to wear Arsenal’s legendary No.14 shirt once famously worn by Thierry Henry.
Agreement reached for Gyokeres after lengthy talks
After intense negotiations throughout the week, Arsenal and Sporting finally agreed on a deal worth €63.5million (£54.8m) plus €10million (£8.7m) in add-ons.
Talks had previously stalled over the structure of the payment, but a compromise between clubs was reached on Friday.
The Athletic reports that Gyokeres has been given permission to travel to England for his medical, which could be completed as early as Saturday.
Arsenal moved quickly to secure his services ahead of rival suitors, including Manchester United, with the player reportedly focused solely on a move to the Emirates despite the chance to reunite with former coach Ruben Amorim.
Gyokeres lands legendary No.14 shirt
As part of the deal, Gyokeres will inherit Arsenal’s iconic No.14 shirt, a number steeped in club history thanks to record scorer Thierry Henry.
Mikel Arteta has made signing a striker a top priority this summer following another second-place finish in the Premier League and injury issues with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Gyokeres joins after a stunning season in Portugal, where he netted 54 goals in 52 games last term and won back-to-back league titles with Sporting.
His journey from Brighton to Coventry and then Sporting has culminated in a blockbuster move to the Premier League, with high hopes now resting on his shoulders.
