Augsburg vs. Leverkusen: Tella provides spark as Super Eagles derby ends in defeat for Onyeka

In a thrilling Bundesliga encounter, the matchup between Augsburg and Bayer Leverkusen showcased a notable clash between Nigeria Super Eagles stars Frank Onyeka and Nathan Tella.

The match, held at Augsburg's WWK Arena, ended in a 2-0 victory for the reigning champions, Leverkusen, with Tella putting on a show on Saturday.

Leverkusen started the game with aggressive momentum, leading to an early yellow card for Onyeka in the 12th minute. 

The pressure mounted as Leverkusen's Martin Terrier opened the scoring two minutes later, following a brilliant assist from Granit Xhaka, who delivered a precise ball to Frimpong, setting up Terrier's goal. 

Tella attempted a shot in the 22nd minute that was expertly saved by Augsburg's goalkeeper Labrović before showing his skills by assisting Florian Wirtz, who doubled Leverkusen's lead with a well-placed shot into the corner of the net five minutes from time.

Augsburg thought they had equalized shortly after but were denied by an offside call confirmed by VAR. The first half ended with Leverkusen capitalising on their chances—two shots resulting in two goals.

The second half saw Leverkusen maintain control of the match, effectively stifling Augsburg’s attempts to build momentum. 

Onyeka continued to battle on the field despite his earlier booking, playing until he was substituted in the 87th minute alongside Tella, who had been a constant threat to the Leverkusen defence throughout the match.

This match not only highlighted the competitive spirit of both players but also put on display the growing presence of Nigerian footballers in European leagues. 

Tella's performance was particularly impressive as he kept Augsburg's defenders occupied and contributed significantly to Leverkusen's attacking play and was rewarded with an assist.
