The Amsterdam Court of Appeal has ruled that former Netherlands winger Quincy Promes will stay behind bars while his double appeal crawls through the system, bluntly declaring there are “still sufficient reasons to keep him detained, including the risk that he might flee abroad.”

Promes, 33, shuffled into court on Tuesday fresh from extradition in hand‑cuffs, only to discover he will not taste freedom any time soon.

The decision keeps the former Ajax and Sevilla star in pre‑trial detention despite furious lobbying from his legal team.

According to NL Times, defence counsel Cem Polat told judges that two foreign clubs: one in Dubai, another in Latvia, and at least one Dutch side are ready to sign the footballer  “the moment he is released.”

Promes himself tried to sweet‑talk the bench, insisting as per Dutch News: “My ambition is to return to the highest level… My location was always known, I proudly posted every goal I scored. I was never on the run.”

The judges were unmoved, pointing out that the 33-year-old has already spent years hopping jurisdictions to dodge arrest, first in Russia, then the UAE.

“Lengthy sentences are on the horizon,” the panel noted, making any promise to fly back for court “less than reassuring.”

Promes faces a combined seven and a half year sentence: six years for trafficking 1,362 kg of cocaine hidden in “sea‑salt” containers, plus 18 months for stabbing his cousin at a 2020 family party in Abcoude after a row over a missing necklace

Dutch authorities reportedly seized nine Dutch properties and placed the winger on a global wanted list before arresting him in Dubai in March.

Moscow’s lack of an extradition treaty helped him play cat‑and‑mouse for almost three years.

With the case still “in the preparatory phase” and no date set for a full merits hearing, Promes could remain locked up well into 2026.

Promes, who played for the Dutch national team on 50 occasions, was playing for UAE second division side United FC Dubai until his arrest.

Before this, the winger had played for Ajax, FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles, Sevilla, and Spartak Moscow.
