Spanish investigators have pointed to tyre damage, skid marks and vehicle data as key evidence suggesting the Portugal forward exceeded the speed limit before the accident that killed him and his brother.

Police suspect Diogo Jota was driving over the speed limit when he and his brother died in a car crash last week, and they have cited multiple factors supporting this conclusion.

The 28-year-old Liverpool star and his 25-year-old brother André Silva were killed after the Lamborghini they were travelling in careered off the A52 motorway in Zamora province last Thursday.

The tragedy struck just 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso. According to Spain’s Civil Guard, the car is believed to have been travelling significantly faster than the legal limit of 120km/h (75mph) when it suffered a suspected tyre blowout.

A spokesperson for the Civil Guard said: “The expert report is being carried out and finished, where among other things they are studying the marks left by one of the wheels of the vehicle. Everything also points to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed of the road. All the tests carried out for the moment point to the fact that the driver of the vehicle was Diogo Jota.

The completed report will be handed to the court in Puebla de Sanabria when the investigation is finalised.

Skid Marks, Tyre Damage and Vehicle Data

Investigators have identified three main reasons they believe excessive speed played a central role in the crash.

First, forensic teams studying the scene have analysed extensive skid marks on the motorway. These marks suggest the Lamborghini lost control in a manner consistent with high-speed driving.

The Civil Guard said the patterns left by the wheels were longer and deeper than typically seen when a vehicle is travelling within the legal limit.

Second, the suspected tyre blowout is believed to have occurred while the vehicle was moving at a velocity that made it impossible to regain control.

Although tyre failures can happen at any speed, police sources say the damage indicates the vehicle’s performance characteristics contributed to the severity of the incident. A sudden loss of pressure at very high speeds often causes the car to veer off the road before the driver has time to react.

Finally, data extracted from the car’s internal systems has reportedly indicated that the Lamborghini was accelerating shortly before it left the road.

Spanish investigators are analysing telemetry and the onboard computer, which can store information about speed, braking, and steering inputs. While the full results have not been released, authorities have suggested early findings point to a “high excess of speed.”

Liverpool Mourns as Pre-Season Begins

Jota and his brother were believed to have been driving to Santander to catch a ferry back to England so the forward could rejoin Liverpool pre-season training. He had recently undergone a lung procedure and had been advised not to fly.

The brothers were laid to rest in their home city of Gondomar near Porto on Saturday, in a funeral attended by many of Jota’s Liverpool teammates.

Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, who both posted emotional tributes to their friend, were among those seen arriving at the Axa Training Centre on Tuesday for pre-season tests. New signing Jeremie Frimpong also joined the squad.

Liverpool delayed the start of training in the wake of the tragedy and are expected to reconvene fully by Thursday.

The Premier League champions will play their first friendly against Preston on Sunday.

Tributes and flowers continue to be left at the entrance of the training ground as the club and fans mourn the loss of a player remembered as much for his kindness as his talent.
