The Port Harcourt-based club defeated a 1-0 Usman Abdallah’s team, thanks to Aniekeme Okon's goal just after the half-hour mark.

The win helped Rivers United to return to the top of the Nigerian Premier League table with 29 points from 15 games.

Reflecting on the victory, Finidi acknowledged that they created several chances in the first half and relaxed in the second half.

"We are very happy for the victory which was a difficult game. The first half we created one or two chances but in the second half the team was a little bit nervous trying to hold on to the only goal instead of going for the second," Finidi said in a post-match interview.

Finidi acknowledged the team's defensive resilience in the second half, as they managed to preserve their lead despite facing pressure from Kano Pillars.

"At the tail end of the game we pushed back defensively to see how we can preserve the lead," he added.

Finidi was appointed as Super Eagles coach in April to succeed Jose Peseiro but resigned after a defeat to Benin Republic that left the Super Eagles struggling in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
