The three-time African champions must claim maximum points at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Tuesday to stand any chance of qualifying for the next FIFA World Cup.
Even with victory, their fate will depend on Rwanda defeating South Africa in the group’s other decisive fixture.
What Agu said
Speaking with Complete Sports, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach expressed gratitude for the team’s safe arrival in Uyo after their plane made an emergency landing in Angola due to a broken window mid-flight.
“First of all, we give glory to God for granting the players a safe trip back to Nigeria,” he said.
“I could imagine what would have been going on in the minds of the players. But then, we bless God for taking control of the plane.”
The 58-year-old said he believes the players are mentally prepared but must combine hard work with faith.
“I am sure the players are self-motivated to get the job done against Benin on Tuesday.
“They are mentally and psychologically ready to pick the three points and pray that the other result between South Africa and Rwanda will be in our favour,” he said.
With just 90 minutes separating the Super Eagles from the possibility of missing out on back-to-back FIFA World Cups.
