What happened
Following the derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, Mourinho commended the refereeing performance of Slavka Vincic, particularly the penalty decision he waved off despite the protest of the Galatasaray bench, who were, in Mourinho's words, “jumping like monkeys.”
The Cim-Bom released a statement accusing the former Chelsea boss of using derogatory language against Turkish people, using #SayNoToRacism.
Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray and was the principal individual in the penalty incident that resulted in the protests, also shared #SayNoToRacism on Instagram.
Essien’s reaction
Many have swung in defence of Jose following the accusations of racism against Mourinho. His former striker Didier Drogba, who played for Galatasaray for one season, put out a statement vouching for “His dad,” Mourinho.
Essien is another who is said to view Mourinho as a paternal figure and he also reacted in defence. While he did not put out a statement, he shared a picture—the value equal to many words. Via his social media platforms, the former Black Star published a picture of himself, Didier Drogba and Jose Mourinho smiling.
At the time of writing, the former Porto boss has not personally denied Galatasaray’s accusation, but his club Fenerbahce have put out one on his behalf.
