He is the X-factor: Jermaine Defoe reveals surprise player that can win Euros for England
Defoe has thrown his weight behind Callum Wilson, calling the Newcastle striker a potential wildcard for Gareth Southgate at the Euros.
With Harry Kane expected to lead the line for England, recent friendlies have provided Southgate with opportunities to explore alternative options.
Watkins was given a starting role in the defeat against Brazil, while Toney showcased his abilities by starting and scoring in the thrilling draw with Belgium.
Defoe says Callum Wilson can score goals for England
In an exclusive interview with Mirror Football on behalf of Soccer Aid for Unicef, Defoe highlighted the distinct qualities of both forwards:
"Ollie Watkins is a natural goalscorer, whereas Ivan Toney exudes confidence and has a knack for finding the back of the net.
Additionally, Defoe mentioned his former teammate Callum Wilson, who has been sidelined for Newcastle since February 10.
Wilson's potential inclusion in Southgate's final 23 would come as a surprise given his recent absence from competitive action.
"I think if he can keep himself fit he's someone that can score goals for England at the Euros," Defoe noted.
"I've always liked Callum, I played with him a little bit at Bournemouth. He's a goalscorer, a good finisher, and very calm in front of goal."
