Huge blow for Arteta as Arsenal captain Odegaard faces doubt after new shoulder injury
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is once again sidelined following a fresh injury to his shoulder, dealing a blow to the Gunners ahead of their Champions League opener against Athletic Club.
Manager Mikel Arteta revealed the setback after Odegaard lasted only 18 minutes in the match against Nottingham Forest.
Odegaard, who had returned to the starting lineup, was replaced by youngster Ethan Nwaneri after appearing to land awkwardly following a tackle from teammate Jurrien Timber.
The injury looks similar to the one sustained against Leeds last month.
What Arteta said
Asked whether Odegaard will be fit for the Champions League clash, Arteta said, “He played with the national team, he was feeling good, and suddenly something happened again. I think it’s the same shoulder that he injured last time. He was uncomfortable to continue.”
“He will certainly be doing everything from now on to be ready. I guarantee you that, but I don’t know.”
The uncertainty puts Arsenal in a precarious situation, as the captain’s leadership and creative control have been key to the team’s ambitions this season.
Without Odegaard, the Gunners may need to lean on squad depth and shape their game plan around other creative options in midfield.
