Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has backed Arsenal as having the strongest squad in the Premier League, but insists the title race will ultimately come down to Liverpool and Chelsea.

MIkel Obi believes Ruben Amorim is out of his depth at Manchester United.

Arsenal spent more than £250 million to strengthen their team, with Viktor Gyökeres arriving from Sporting Lisbon as a marquee striker signing.

Mikel Arteta’s side also added Martin Zubimendi in midfield, while England internationals Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze were brought in to increase depth in wide areas.

What Mikel said

The ex-Chelsea midfielder, speaking on The Obi One Podcast, praised the Gunners’ heavy summer investment after a third consecutive second-place finish.

He said, “The club again, the owners, the hierarchies have gone out again and massively backed Mikel Arteta.

“They have the strongest squad in the Premier League, them and Liverpool. In terms of depth, Arsenal has the strongest, two players in every position.

“Arteta knows there is no excuse and I’m happy he’s come out and said it. He has to win the Premier League or Champions League, and winning the League Cup or FA Cup is not going to do it. I’m sure right now they also believe this is the time, this is the season.”

Despite the strength of Arteta’s side, Mikel believes it will be Chelsea and Liverpool who contest for the title this year.

Liverpool have started the season with a perfect record after three games and have further boosted their attack with the deadline-day signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Chelsea, meanwhile, remain unbeaten under Enzo Maresca, after lifting the FIFA Club World Cup this summer.

For Mikel, who won two Premier League titles during his 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s confidence and Liverpool’s momentum give them the edge over Arsenal.

Arsenal fans, however, will point to the squad depth and quality now available to Arteta as proof that their side is finally ready to end their two-decade wait for a league title.
