Speaking to A BOLA from the Algarve, where he is taking part in the Summer Football Camp at Pine Cliffs Resort in Albufeira, Berbatov praised the Swedish forward’s quality but couldn’t hide his regret that United missed out.

“Yes, he was phenomenal in Portugal. The goals… Some were incredible. You can see his style, the way he carries himself, his celebrations – that’s confidence,” Berbatov said.

“When you score goals, when you’re a striker, that’s everything. You’re the king of the world. You walk differently; nobody can tell you anything.

“And I’m a little envious, to be honest. Sad and even disappointed he didn’t go to United, especially given the Portuguese connection. But he chose Arsenal.”

Berbatov acknowledged that Arsenal’s attacking style under Mikel Arteta could suit Gyökeres perfectly.

“Arsenal are playing well – attractive, passing football, probing for openings. Arteta is a Pep Guardiola disciple, and that’s how he plays, he’ll never change. Gyökeres will have chances to score there, for sure.”

The Bulgarian also looked ahead to the season’s opening blockbuster fixture: Manchester United vs Arsenal.

“That first game of the season will be a test for everyone – Amorim versus Arteta, United against Arsenal, Gyökeres against Sesko.

"If you want to show intent, the first game has to be big. And if you win, it will boost confidence, show Amorim is working well, and announce: ‘This is the system, these are my players, more may come, but this is how we’re playing this season’.”

Premier League Challenge for Amorim

Berbatov stressed that new United boss Ruben Amorim must deliver quickly in a league where rivals like Liverpool, City, Arsenal, and Chelsea are all strengthening.

“United can’t wait until the third, fourth, or fifth game because the others won’t. They have to come out swinging from the start.”

With Gyokeres set to lead the line for Arsenal and Benjamin Sesko wearing United’s No. 9 shirt, Berbatov believes the Premier League will have no shortage of intriguing battles when the new season kicks off.
