Nigerian football legend John Obi Mikel has asserted his position as the most successful and decorated football [player out of Nigeria.
Mikel made the comments in his most recent podcast featuring Nigerian football star Victor Osimhen.
Mikel Obi’s claim
The 35-year-old, who had an illustrious career both at club and international levels reaffirmed his achievements and contributions as he eulogised Osimhen’s historic Ballon d’Or finish.
As one of the greatest to ever play the game from Nigeria, the defensive midfielder’s career path included a stint at Premier League side Chelsea football club.
It was with the Blues that Obi won most of his club honours, domestic and international as the Blues won all domestic and European titles during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Also, his leadership skills were on display as he led by example as he rose to captain the Super Eagles, with whom he won the AFCON in 2013.
Obi on his legacy
Speaking about Osimhen’s eighth position in the Ballon d’Or, Obi reemphasised his position as Nigeria’s most decorated and successful.
“He needs to break my f**king records first,” Obi said, speaking about Osimhen’s position in Nigerian football, in a video posted on X.com.
“I am still the most successful and decorated football player from Nigeria,” he added.
Obi, who went on to praise Osimhen for his historic finish in the Ballon d’Or, was also a member of the Nigerian Dream Team that picked up a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.
While he acknowledged the emergence of new talents like Osimhen and the great things they are doing, Mikel’s assertion reflects the pride and confidence that define his legacy as a midfielder who left an indelible mark in Nigerian football.
