'I support Ter Stegen, he's Barcelona's captain' - De Jong voices his support for teammate
Rumours about Ter Stegen potentially losing the captaincy have intensified recently after he insisted on staying with Barcelona.
The German international was told by Hansi Flick that, according to reports, he won't be the starting goalkeeper for Barcelona next season.
The goalkeeper underwent successful surgery for persistent lower back problems that have sidelined him since the start of pre-season and prevented him from participating in the Asian tour.
De Jong backs Ter Stegen
Until now, no Barça player had publicly commented on the matter, but De Jong expressed his support for the goalkeeper.
"For me, Marc is the team captain, as he was last season. He's a world-class player and has been for many years, giving his all for the club. I support him a lot, as does the whole team," said the Dutchman, as reported by Sportal.
De Jong added that he didn't know how Ter Stegen felt about the arrival of new goalkeeper Joan Garcia. He simply commented that Garcia is a very capable keeper.
Meanwhile, De Jong confirmed reports that he will be signing a new contract. His current deal runs until the end of next season, and the new one will extend to 2028.
"I'm very happy at Barça and will finally re-sign. Is almost everything settled? Yes," the Dutchman stated after the friendly against FC Seoul.
De Jong emphasized that he has always been happy in Barcelona, despite difficult periods caused by ankle injuries. "I'm very happy at Barça, and the club is happy with me. I'm happy with the team, the way we work with the coach...," he explained.
