I will forever hold you in high esteem: Osimhen tell ex-Super Eagles striker Ighalo in emotional tribute

Sharing a throwback photo of the two together, Osimhen wrote, “One of the few people I will forever hold in high esteem.”

The photo Osimhen shared dates back to their time together on holiday in Nigeria - a memorable moment from a cruise last season. 

Beyond a simple snapshot, it symbolises Ighalo’s role as a trailblazer who paved the way for younger Nigerian talents like Osimhen. 

Ighalo, known for his diverse career across Europe, China, and the Middle East, made history as the first Nigerian to score for Manchester United during his 2020 loan spell. 

His work ethic and humility left a lasting impression on Osimhen, who was just emerging on the international scene during Ighalo’s later years with the national team.

The relationship between Osimhen and Ighalo exemplifies the mentorship culture within the Super Eagles, where senior players guide the next generation. 

Ighalo, now 36 and playing in the Saudi Pro League, was a key figure during Nigeria’s 2019 AFCON campaign, winning the Golden Boot.
