I wish I was like Nico Williams — Figo tells Real Madrid to hijack Athletic Club star from Barcelona
Former Real Madrid winger Figo has told Los Blancos to make a move for Nico Williams, who has already reached an agreement on personal terms with Barcelona.
What Figo said
During an interview with Dario AS, Figo spoke glowingly about Williams, praising his talent and urging his former club to sign him.
“There are many players I like. I would sign Nico Williams, for sure. He is a gem,” he told the publication. “And his price seems affordable to me, considering the money that is spent nowadays. He would be a good signing because of the quality he has and also because of his youth.”
Figo continues with the praise, highlighting the Basque winger’s pace, stating that he wished he was as fast as Williams during his heydays.
“We’re different players. He’s a player I like a lot because of his position. I like wingers, as it was where I played better (in my own career). But I wasn’t as fast as him; I wish I had been so fast.”
Barcelona have an agreement in place
The problem with Figo statement was that his former club, Barcelona, had already reached an agreement on personal terms with the 22-year-old.
After failing to reach an agreement with Athletic Club on an instalment payment plan, they are expected to pay the whole €60m release clause, plus inflation, next month.
