The former Liverpool player downplayed the significance of the African football tournament on Mohamed Salah's Ballon d'Or chances.

Following his take, several African football players, both past and present, have criticised the former Liverpool player, with many of them resorting to making snide remarks.

Emenike’s reply to Carragher 

Former Super Eagles player and 2013 AFCON winner Emenike is the latest Nigerian to join the trend.

The 37-year-old striker took to Instagram to post a picture of himself lifting the AFCON trophy and added the caption, “I'm proud to be an AFCON and Golden Boot winner for my beloved country. This is the proudest achievement of my life. Thank God I'm a Nigerian.”

Mikel Obi, the former Super Eagles captain, also had harsh words for Carragher in his statement, and even Jay-Jay Okocha was not spared from his criticism.

Carragher scoffed at the statement that AFCON is a major tournament.

Carragher has frequently received criticism for his controversial opinions as a football analyst. However, the backlash he's currently facing is unprecedented.
